If we ever meet again.

This was written for the best friend I lost about 8 years ago. We haven't spoken at all for about 3-4 years now. Sometimes, I hear a bit about how he's doing; seems like he's coaching basketball and dancing and directing musicals and well on his way to becoming a successful accountant at the same time - he's as socially and academically brilliant now as he was in highschool. Watching from the sidelines, I'm silently proud of all his achievements. I hope he continues to shine. He wrote me a letter all those years ago, and I guess this poem sums up everything I wanted to say to him in response, but couldn't. Gambatte!


If we ever meet again

If we ever meet again,
There are some things I'd like to say,
Like thank you, please, and I'm sorry
That things turned out this way.

Thank you for making me laugh 'til I cried,
Thank you for relenting when we argue.
Thank you for giving me freedom to choose,
Knowing my choice might not be you.

Please follow all your hopes and dreams,
Please smile everyday and be happy,
Please leave behind all the heartache,
And erase me from your memory.

I'm sorry my answer wasn't what you wanted,
I'm sorry to be the cause of your tears.
I'm sorry I couldn't return your feelings,
And for avoiding you all these years.

I wanted to go back to the way things were,
But I couldn't ask you to pretend,
That your confession was just a joke,
And that you were still my best friend.

It would be too cruel and too selfish,
Something that I just couldn't do.
So, with a heavy heart, I let you go,
Knowing it was best for you.

I never once told you all these years,
How much I've missed your company.
I was distant and cold and I'm sorry,
But I had to make you forget me.

I can't remember the last time we spoke,
But if you ever chance upon this letter;
Know that my sincerest hope and wish
Is that you've found someone better.

They say that time can heal everything,
All the sadness and the pain,
So I pray you'll smile at me like a stranger
If we ever meet again.
