Mu Sang (his religious name) was a monk who grew up in Chungyeong Temple. His father, Gim Yun Seong, was a runaway slave from Hapha's household and participated in the Manjeok's mutiny. His true identity was only revealed during the interrogation session for the monk rebellion. He managed to keep his life but became a slave under Choe U's household. Gim Jun was sent to the hard labor camp. As he was well-versed in martial arts, he was given an opportunity to represent the red team in the gyeokgu (ball game on horseback) competition. Gim Jun was unwilling at first but later took it up as he wanted to save Wol A. He cleared all the 3 rounds of competition and emerged the final winner. Thereafter, he joined the slave army unit under the leadership of Song Gil Yu. He was given the rank of So-gunjang (platoon commander). Gim Jun was an intelligent and courageous man who possessed great determination. He was too good to remain a slave. He slowly rose up the ladder and became the top military leader.
2. Choe Song I

Song I was the only daughter of Choe U, and granddaughter of Choe Chung Heon. She was intelligent but headstrong. She was awed by Gim Jun’s strong character and fell in love with him over time. Song I was Gim Jun’s savior at the interrogation ground and she helped him in many ways in the gyeokgu competition. Choe Chung Heon handpicked General Gim Yak Seon as Song I’s husband before he died.
3. Wol A

Wol A was born to a literati family. Her father was a high court official but was killed because he was implicated in a poetry incident which was deemed a threat to Hapha. Her whole clan was exiled and they became slaves. Her mother later committed suicide after being defiled by an evildoer. At that time, she was only eight old. She was then brought up by Monk Su Beop, who treated her like his own daughter. Wol A met Gim Jun at the temple and they became close 'siblings'. Their relationship took a turn when it turned out that Gim Jun was not really a monk. After the monk rebellion, she was sent to work in Dobang's kitchen. She was often scolded and beaten up by Ran Jam. Fortunately, it happened that Choe U's wife, Madam Jeong was a close friend of her mother and recognized her. Madam Jeong took Wol A under her wing and even helped to arrange the marriage for Wol A. However, Wol A's beauty caught the eyes of many others including Choe Yang Baek and Man Jong.
4. Choe Yang Baek

Yang Baek was both a close friend and rival of Gim Jun. Their backgrounds were pretty similar. Yang Baek was originally a slave but became a So-gunjang after he won in the same gyeokgu competition a few years ago. He taught Gim Jun how to play gyeokgu and also lent him his prized horse for the competition. Chun Sim, the personal attendant to Song I, was madly in love with him. However, Yang Baek had no interest in her and only liked Wol A.
