    INSTANT KOREAN

    Annyeong haseyo!

    For those who are too busy to study the Korean language and just want to have a quick look on the basic useful expressions, this thread is for you. :)

    I got this idea after seeing a phrasebook in Spanish… so I thought, why not a Korean version of that. We often encounter phrases that sound familiar, words that we always hear in every contemporary Kdrama (Sageuk, of course, has a set of its own like ‘Abamama’ or ‘Joenha’). This thread will focus on those familiar phrases that could help you survive or communicate in Korean. The terms are categorized for better reference.

    A more in-depth study of the Korean Language can be found in the Asian Language subforum, Learning Korean Lessons - http://www.darksmurf...asian-language/

    **for pronunciation reference you can check Learning Korean Lesson 1 (and next one Lesson 2).
    **the Romanization of the words are in KRS since not all systems can generate the ŏ & ŭ which are used in the MRS system. ŏ = eo, ŭ = eu

    Legend:
    English Translation Romanized Word Word in Korean (Extra information/examples)

    YES/NO
    YES in Korean actually means I agree and NO means I don’t agree
    Yes = Ne or Ye
    No = Aniyo 아니요

    GREETINGS
    Hello, Good morning, Goof afternoon, Good evening, How are you?, How do you do? =
    *all of these greetings are incorporated in a single Korean expression, like a universal greeting that literally means“Are you at peace?”
    A reply to these greetings, in all cases, may be a repetition of the above phrase preceded by Nae, which means“Yes”

    Annyeong haseyo 안녕하세요
    Yeoboseyo 여보세요 (used only on the phone)
    *More formal version of this term is (for someone older or higher in rank)
    Annyeong hasimnikka 안녕하십니까
    *Informal or shortcut
    Annyeong would be enough

    Good Night = Annyeonghi jumuseyo 안녕히 주무세요

    Goodbye =
    Annyeonghi gyeseyo 언녕히 계세요 (said by the person leaving, literally means “Stay in Peace”)
    Annyeonghi gaseyo 언녕히 가세요 (said by the person not leaving, literally means “Go in Peace”)
    Sugo Haseyo 수고하세요 (said by a person leaving a workplace, literally means “Work Hard”)

    Thank You =
    gamsa hamnida 감사합니다
    gomapseumnida 고맙습니다
    gomawo 고마ㅝ (informal, used for friends or younger person)
    You are Welcome = cheon maneyo 천만에요

    I LOVE YOU = Sarang haeyo 사랑애요
    I’m Sorry = joesong hamnida 죄송합니다
    Excuse me = mian hamnida 미안합니다

    THE BASIC QUESTIONS
    How = Eotteoke 얻덯게
    Where = Eodi 어디
    When = Eonje 언제
    Who = Nugu 누구
    Why = Wae
    What = Mwo 무엇

    Remember these?
    Aigoo = Ohh (the word doesn’t have a direct translation but we assume it to be the same as “oh” in English)
    Ya! = Hey!
    Wa / Wo = Ahh

    PHRASES
    I don’t know what you are saying (if you don't understand the words in Korean)=
    Mollayo museun marinji 몰라요 무슨 말인지

    What is your name? = Irumi mwosimnikka 이름이 무엇입닉가
    I am Waggy (or Waggi) = Naneun Waggi imnida 나는 왁기입니다

    ** More examples and phrases next time, like when you want to ask something:
    What is this?
    What is that?
    Who is that?
    How old are you? ….and many more.

    Thank for the comment Eduardjr :) I got some typo there LOL.

    I changed it now: Yes = Ne or Ye

    The changing of color stuff is actually confusing me but had to do it so they could see better.

    As for gomapsumnida it is now gomapseumnida, I forgot to write the 'e', thank you for noticing...but then I'm sticking with the -mnida and not -pnida because there is rule about that, which I'll probably explain in Learning Korean Lesson 2. I was actually thinking about that, too - placing 'p' before 'nida' but at this point, it might just confuse them because it is not how it is pronounced. I will explain more about that in the Learning Korean Lessons, I just want to take it one step at a time. :)

    @Waggy
    No problem, I just noticed. :thumbsu:
    I just started 1 week ago, Korean Language class in our hometown so I can go to South Korea for a job. :lol: At first it is hard but after 1 week, it so easy for me now. I memorized all their alphabets and numbers. For now, I'm memorizing their vocabulary. So many to memorize... :devil: my nose is bleeding... :lol:

    About the -mnida and -pnida, I just follow the alphabet of Bi-eup, Bi-eup is letter B/P, we use it letter B for 1st consonant and in final consonant is letter P. So that's why I notice it. Anyway.., your right, its so hard to pronounce it 'coz when my teacher is saying Bang(Room), she say Pang. :lol:

    Thank for the comment Eduardjr :) I got some typo there LOL.

    I changed it now: Yes = Ne or Ye
