Synopsis
A drama that deals with the brain and neurosurgeons.
Lee Kang Hoon (Shin Ha Kyun), who graduated from the top medical school, works at the top hospital, and is the top neurosurgeon around. Basically, he’s Brain No. 1. (And he works on brains, too!) He has ambitions to become the director at his university hospital. He is obsessed with success, which is probably both his greatest flaw and strength, since it makes him steely and fierce.
However, once he meets his sunbae Kim Sang Chul (Jung Jin Young), the prickly genius doctor and world famous neurologist, he turns over a new leaf and becomes a sincere doctor. Seo Joon Suk (Jo Dong Hyuk) is a doctor and will become Lee Kang Hoon’s rival. Yoon Ji Hye (Choi Jung Won) is also a neurosurgeon who grew up in an ordinary family. She is extremely strict in matters of work and study, but has a warm bedside manner with her patients.

Some of you might be wondering whether to watch this new show, Brain. It is not solely on brain diagnosis and surgery. There're also romance and office politics. Since I’m helping out in the translation of Brain, for a start, let me give you more insights into the 4 main characters and what you can expect in the first 6 episodes...I'm trying my best not to include any spoilers!

• Dr. Lee Gang Hun – LGH is a neurosurgeon and an attending doctor of Chunha University Hospital. While LGH is talented and extremely hardworking, he is also a highly conceited and ambitious person. He makes scornful remarks on his fellow colleagues, and lacks the human touch and empathy for the patients. His obsession with success and over-confidence often put his patients at risk…(find out more in episode 3). As the overall in charge of the interns, he has high expectations on them and is very critical. LGH’s personality is probably due to his family background and the hardship he went through to get to where he is now...(find out more in episode 5). As for romance, LGH is chased by Jang Yu Jin (find out more in episode 4) but he has some feelings for YJH (find out more in episodes 2, 5 and 6). Shin Ha Kyun who plays LGH is the soul of this show with his excellent acting. He will make you hate and love this character.

• Prof. Gim Sang Cheol – GSC is a genius and renowned neurosurgeon at Chunha University Hospital. He demonstrates good doctor’s ethics and has a caring heart for his patients. He is not hungry for power and doesn’t want to suck into ‘office politics’…(find out more in episode 2). Instead, GSC focuses on research and giving guidance to the younger doctors. Jung Jin Young plays GSC and he fits in the role perfectly.

• Dr. Seo Jun Seok – SJS is a neurosurgeon and works in the same hospital as LGH as an attending doctor. He is in the same medical cohort as LGH. SJS also likes YJH and always protects her. He is a professional and friendly doctor and came from a family where his fathers and brothers are all doctors. He applied and qualified for fellowship at Stanford University. However, he decided not to go and became a fierce rival to LGH for the position of assistant professor…(find out more in episode 4). Jo Dong Hyuk plays SJS.

• Dr. Yun Ji Hye – YJH is a neurosurgeon who is in her third year residency. She is hardworking student but often scolded by LGH for her mistakes. She has strong principles and cares for her patients. She assists GSC in his research and enjoys a good mentor-mentee relationship with him. Between LGH and SJS, she actually likes … (find out more in episode 6). Choi Jung Won plays YJH.

Give the show a try. I feel the sincerity in the production crew to create an excellent production. The shots for the surgery scenes are very realistic and the actors/actresses are carefully chosen. There is also enough suspense on how the story will unfold...

I guess this show is worth another look. I tried on 2 separate occasions to watch an episode but never got through the whole show. I think my mistake may have been that I was eating dinner while I was watching.... As fascinating as the surgeries are, seeing neurosurgery on someone's grey matter is not good for one's appetite!
