King Gwanggaeto the Great (2011) Episode 2 Recap

Episode 2

Damdeok is brought before Murong Chui and is forced to kneel. When Murong Chui asks for his identity Damdeok identifies himself as “The Ghost General From The North”. Murong Chui laughs at Damdeok's reply. He is however impressed with Damdeok’s lack of fear and offers Damdeok a deal, “I will spare your life if you beg”. Damdeoks laughs at the offer and tells Murong Chui that he would not have come on the mission if he had wanted to live. Murong Chui laughs back and asks if Goguryeo is out of capable generals for them to send a child (Damdeok). Damdeok tells him that he volunteered so as to cut off Murong Chui’s head himself. Murong Chui is amazed at this and asks Damdeok if he can’t see the size of his army. Damdeok asks him, “Don’t you know how many emperors have failed to conquer Goguryeo?” One of the Houyan Generals advices Murong Chui that there might be others hiding and that they should move on. The general moves to kill Damdeok but Murong Chui says that since Damdeok came to kill him, he should be the one to kill Damdeok.

Close by, where the other Goguryeo soldiers are hiding, there is uncertainty on what to do when they are ordered to prepare to shoot flamed arrows at the bridge. Wonbong however, reminds them of Damdeok’s order, that the mission to kill Murong Chui took precedent over everything even his life. On the bridge, Murong Chui offers Damdeok one last chance to surrender and become his servant. Damdeok tells Murong Chui that he will take him ask a guide to the underworld. Infuriated, Murong Chui gets close enough to Damdeok to notice a strange smell which he realizes is oil. Panicked, Murong Chui steps back and Damdeok orders the archers hiding to shoot arrows with flamed tips. The arrows are shot and the bridge catches fire and the pouches filled with oil start exploding. The Houyan ranks are marred with confusion as soldiers try to save themselves from burning alive. Damdeok manages to acquire a sword from a Houyan soldier but when he is about to attack Murong Chui, a pouch placed close to where they were standing explodes and Damdeok is forced to jump into the river. Enraged, Murong Chui orders his soldiers to go after Damdeok but he is instead pulled back by his generals to the river bank and away from the flames.

On the other side of the river, a flaming sword is thrown towards Murong Chui and it scratches his cheek. Murong Chui looks towards where the sword came from and is shocked to see Damdeok alive and advancing towards him. Damdeok challenges Murong Chui to a duel. Murong Chui wants to oblige but is held back by his generals who send soldiers to kill Damdeok. Damdeok defeats them but Murong Chui shoots him with an arrow. Murong Chui praises Damdeok for his bravery but tells his that he was too reckless. Murong Chui says that he will cut Damdeok’s head and hang it for all Goguryeo soldiers to see. Damdeok answers back, “Goguryeo soldiers will hang your head at Gungnaeseong”. Infuriated, Murong Chui advances towards Damdeok but Ko Mu and an army of Goguryeo soldiers appear and Murong Chui is forced to retreat. Damdeok collapses and the soldiers he was leading surround him. Ko Mu is shocked when he realizes that the soldier who had just collapsed was the prince.

Damdeok is taken back to Yodongseong but Ko Mu is not pleased with his actions. Ko Mu asks Damdeok if he thouhght he could kill the Houyan Emperor. Wonbong comes to Damdeok’s defence saying that the prince put his life on the line for the mission to which Ko Mu asks, “Then why did he come back alive”. Ko Mu explains to Damdeok that by hurting Murong Chui’s pride, the attack on Yodongseong will be more fierce. Ko Mu also warns Damdeok not to take Murong Chui lightly stating that, “He is much better than his father. He has made Houyan a powerful nation".

Murong Chui arrives at the Houyan camp outside Yodongseong and is raging. He ask the crown prince what he has been doing while his army was being humiliated. The crown prince and his generals fall on their knees and ask for death. Murong Chui promises that if they do not take over Yodongseong, he would have them killed. He also informs them that he will be leading the battle taking command of the army from the crown prince.

Murong Chui and his army advance towards Yodongseong. Outside Yodongseong, Ko Mu and Murong Chui have a heated exchange of words. Ko Mu warns Murong Chui not to advance anymore or else Murong Chui would be killed. Murong Chui laughs at this saying that Ko Mu’s brother, King Gogugwon was chased into the woods by his father hence Ko Mu should just surrender. Ko Mu retorts that the reason why Murong Chui’s father hid in the south was because he was afraid of Ko Mu. Ko Mu’s comment pushes Murong Chui's final button and he consequently orders the attack. The Houyan start by using catapults which seem to overwhelm the Goguryeo soldiers. Goguryeo soldiers try using arrows to stop the advance but the Houyan soldiers reach the wall and set up ladders. However, they are not able to breach the walls. Next, the Houyan employ siege towers which are momentarily successful and a few Houyan soldiers enter Yodongseong but are taken care of. Goguryeo soldiers manage to topple the siege towers and this makes the Houyan army withdraw.

Back in the Houyan camp, Murong Chui is frustrated because they have been attacking for five days without success. He gives the crown prince three more days to capture Yodongseong after which he is going to kill them one by one. General Fengba comes up with a plan. Goguryeo soldiers see lights in the sky and inform Ko Mu and the other generals who are in the command tent that “there are ghost lights in the sky”. Ko Mu recognizes the lights as floating lanterns. Suddenly the lanterns start falling and the Goguryeo soldiers realize that they are falling on the military rations storeroom. They rush over to the storeroom but it is already ablaze. Desiring to save a few bags of rice, Damdeok douses himself with water and rushes into the burning building. He manages to carry out a couple of bags but when he attempts to do that again Ko Mu holds him back because it was too risky. Murong Bao and Fengba who are watching from a distance are very pleased and when they report back to Murong Chui, he is also very pleased with the results and now believes that it is only a matter of time.

Without military rations, conditions in Yodongseong become terrible. With less that fifteen days of food left, Ko Mu lets the court know the situation they are in and requests aid. The king orders the Prime Minister to gather rations and send them to Yodongseong. The prime minster and the soldiers he is leading get ambushed by Murong Bao, forced to retreat and the carts they is transporting are captured. Murong Bao is excited and is looking forward to be rewarded for his success. However, upon inspection of the carts they relaize that they have been tricked because that the carts are full of rocks.

Ko Chang and Damdeok meet up with Mo Doyeong who is leading some soldiers and carts. Mo Doyeong informs them that the Prime Minister accomplished his mission and returned to Gungnaeseong. They start advancing to Yodongseong with the rations but come across a tree blocking their path. Damdeok advises that they should turn back but it is too late. The Houyan soldiers who were waiting in ambush attack and are able so seize the rations forcing Damdeok and his soldiers to retreat. While retreating Damdeok stops and says that they have to burn the rations because they cannot let the Houyan army use it. They burn the rations and withdraw back to Yodongseong.

The Houyan camp is excited about the turn of events and Murong Chui is optimistic that Yodongseong will soon be his. Back in the Goguryeo court, the King is shocked with the outcome. The prime minister takes responsibility for the loss if the rations but the king says that it is nobody’s fault. Gye Pil suggests that they send an envoy to Houyan but the prime minister disagrees and suggests that instead of sending an envoy to Houyan they should send one to Beiwei, an enemy of Houyan. The prime minister also says that they should not do it in secret so that word can reach the Houyan spies in Gungnaeseong who will in turn report back to Murong Chui.

Word reaches the Houyan camp that an envoy has been sent to Beiwei, however, unlike his generals, Murong Chui dismisses it as a ploy by Goguryeo. Murong Chui is frustrated because despite the hardships in Yodongseong, there isn't much change. He still remains cautious with regards to Beiwei stating that they cannot afford to be out of Houyan for too long or else Beiwei would attack. Murong Bao comes up with a strategy to use the captured prisoners to lure the Goguryeo army out of the fortress. They leak false information about when and where they plan to attack to the prisoners and ensure that security around the jail is lax thus ensuring that the prisoners escape. The prisoners escape and manage to get back to Yodongseong.

In Yodongseong, the prisoners are arrested and brought before Ko Mu. Ko Mu suspects that they could be Houyan spies because that many prisoners could not managed to escape otherwise. He orders their execution. The escapees inform Ko Mu of what they overheard in the Houyan camp but Ko Mu ignores them. Damdeok stops the executions and asks Ko Mu to trust them because they were captured while defending the military rations. He also informs the commander that it is a scheme orchestrated by the Houyan army and that they should play along in order to lure the Houyan army into a valley outside the fort where they will be waiting in ambush. Because of the risks the plan entails no general wants to lead the army that will lure Houyan into the valley since the chances of survival are slim. Damdeok volunteers but Ko Mu refuses because he is a prince. Damdeok asks them if they want to stay in the fort and die of starvation or die while fighting the enemy. Yeon Seolta finally volunteers. In the Houyan camp, Murong Chui is getting ready to go to battle. His brother tells him that if his plan succeeds, their father will be very proud of him. Murong Bao is also looking forward to finally capturing “The Ghost General from The North”.

Outside the Yodongseong, Murong Bao is elated that his plan worked. He orders an attack on the Goguryeo army led by Yeon Seolta who after fighting for a short while retreat. Murong Bao and his soldiers give chase. During the retreat, a lot of Goguryeo soldiers are killed and this is hard for the Goguryeo soldiers waiting in ambush to watch. Fengba finally notices that they are in a valley and that the number of soldiers they were pursuing was too small. He consequently suspects that they have been tricked. Ko Mu who was hiding on the valley walls with his soldiers stands and orders an attack. They shoot arrows, roll huge boulders and roll flaming logs. This attacks injure and kill both Houyan and Goguryeo soldiers in the valley. The Houyan generals order a retreat but they path of retreat is blocked by Goguryeo soldiers. While fighting Damdeok sees Murong Bao retreating and chases him. Fengba and Murong Zhou follow Murong Bao when they see him fleeing.

Damdeok finally catches up to Murong Bao who is shocked that it's the “Ghost General From The North”. Damdeok tells him, "I'm Damdeok, a prince of Goguryeo". They start fighting.
