Faith (2012) Episode 6 Recap

Eun Soo is now one of the players in the power game Gi Cheol has set up. The king finds himself isolated from his queen, his Wudalchi, and his heavenly doctor…and Gi Cheol is set to start pitting them against each other. Eun Soo just wants to return home, but now powerful people are running to take her away from her only protection…
EPISODE 6

Everyone goggles at Choi Young’s declaration of love…and then Gi Cheol bursts out into laughter. He gets even more interested in Choi Young and polls his subordinates (Hwasooin and Eum Ja), who answer that Choi has great fighting skill but even more potential.

At the palace, Noguk comes to Gongmin with a proposal: he should send her as a Yuan princess, with all her power, to Gi Cheol to try and get Choi and the doctor back. Gongmin scoffs – so she would have him advertise that Goryeo’s king is unable to control his own subjects, and relies on his Yuan queen to do so? She gets the point, and her face falls. Gongmin demands to know what she thinks of him: a weak and pitiful king, a young king only concerned about saving his own face?

A tear drops down Noguk’s face as she leaves. Lady Choi stays behind to tell the king that Noguk meant only good – that she had to lay down her pride to come here. He sighs, and tells her beseechingly that he isn’t like that; he didn’t send that doctor without a plan.

The doctor in question is just reaching for a wine cup when Choi Young drinks it down: “It doesn’t seem to have poison.” Eun Soo gasps at the craziness, but he just smiles back, “You’re a doctor. You could just treat me.”

Gi Cheol’s advisor starts talking down to Eun Soo, but she snaps right back, “Do you think I’m not cursing because I don’t know how?” He’s left dumbfounded. She turns to Gi Cheol and asks about the supposed patient, telling Choi about the king’s bet. Hwasuin sweetly tells her that she doesn’t know the condition if she fails – execution. She illustrates with a graphic hand gesture at the neck.

Eun Soo just rants about these people’s manners and reaches for the entire wine jug, managing a couple of cupfuls before Choi Young takes it away from her. Turning the topic back to the patient, Gi Cheol says he had someone in mind but then decided on someone else: “The master you served for three years.” Choi Young goes still as Gi Cheol mentions his plan to kill three birds with a single arrow, and commands Choi to escort his lady love to the sickly former king. (This would be Gongmin’s nephew, the son of the debauched king who killed the previous Wudalchi)

Queen Noguk announces in her quarters that she’s personally going to see Gi Cheol (“I’ll go even if I have to climb the fence”), and holds firm despite the efforts of Lady Choi and Jang Bin. Lady Choi tries to tell her that Choi has always been an intelligent boy, revealing that she’s his aunt. Noguk is interested in the relation, but unmoved on her decision.

Eun Soo and Choi Young head out with Dae Man, with Eun Soo giving the horses a hairy eyeball: “Can’t we use the carriage I went in last time?” She gets distracted though asking Choi how long he’s loved her. She prattles on and on about how obtuse she is not to notice this before, but she’s not surprised, and she’s sorry she laughed at him. Exasperated, he keeps trying to tell her it’s not like that, but she cuts him off each time: “It’s all right. I get it.” *wink*

Choi finally sends Dae Man off back to the palace to get Eun Soo’s doctor tools.

One of the queen’s warrior girl bodyguards sends a message to Gi Cheol about her coming his way. He reasons that now’s a good a time as any to ‘take care of her’, saying that she never should have set foot in Goryeo anyway.
The news of the queen’s departure is brought to the king, who picks up on a point: How did Jo In Shil know? The advisor tells him he has a girl planted in her rooms, and the king realizes that there must be another informant in his own quarters, who reports back to Jo In Shil.

In any case, he grabs Choong Seok and instructs him to bring Noguk back in any way possible, even if he has to tie her legs up and drag her here. Interesting – it’s the most emotion he’s shown about Noguk so far; he does care about her.

The queen in question walks through the streets with her cloaked entourage, but they’re beset by assassins in no time. Showing that she is still extremely cool, Lady Choi draws her sword and leads the warrior girls in an attack, while Jang Bin fends off arrows directed at the queen. Eventually, Wudalchi warriors arrive in time to quell the attack; the hidden archers kill the remainder of their own footbound men and run.

The king in the meantime paces furiously up and down the corridors, with his entourage of about 15 people hilariously scrambling to shuffle behind him.

Dae Man goes back to the palace and grabs Eun Soo’s bundle of tools…and hears Doek being threatened for the same tools by Gi Won and his men. He bursts out to protect her, but Gi Won blows a powdered poison that makes him retch and convulse. Gi Won makes off with the bundle while Doek tries to administer to Dae Man, who’s now foaming from the mouth.

Choi Young and Eun Soo rest at a roadside inn, as Choi gets nervous about Dae Man’s absence and Eun Soo stuffs down mandoo. He’s about to go off when Eun Soo stops him, speaking through the mandoo in her mouth: “Look here, I don’t have any interest in your bet. I just want to go back to the portal. Tell me the way and I’ll go alone. Although you’ll have to lend me money…you’ll do that, won’t you? You said you loved me…”

The queen returns, but even though Lady Choi tells her to appease and apologize to the king, who has not eaten or rested, she refuses to see him: “Those are empty concerns. If he asks, only then will I answer.”

The king grows furious that the queen explain herself, and Choong Seok hilariously delivers her lines in exactly her voice and intonation. If this couple continues to have fights, I want Choong Seok to be the messenger.

Gongmin frets even more when he finds out that Dae Man is in a critical state and they have no news on Choi Young and the doctor.

Choi at the moment is impatiently trying to get Eun Soo on a horse, and finally lifts her on top. She lies flat down on the horse’s back, clinging for her life, but sits up and eventually learns to ride.

They stop to camp at night, and he instructs her to sleep close by. She gives him a look, but complies anyway. Eun Soo asks why he’s always protecting things, and asks about the previous king – did he protect him too? He answers yes. She asks if they were close; he says a king’s relationship with his bodyguard isn’t like that, but she guesses that it was, and that’s why he’s so concerned about the king’s health.

She decides to get to know each other better, and gives him her name: Yoo Eun Soo. Huh. Now that I think about it, Choi Young doesn’t even know her name. She asks if he’s married, since people got married early in those days, and he answers no. She says, “Well, what woman would want a man who stabs and kills people all the time?” lol.

Posted Image

She tells him that she’s not married either. Quietly, she says that her parents are farmers outside of Seoul; her mother must be crying right now over her missing daughter. Eun Soo turns over, reminds him about his promise to take her back, and goes to sleep with a “Hey Psycho, good night.”

At the palace, Lady Choi comes to see the king, who hasn’t been eating or sleeping well these past few days. He says that as a king, he’s supposed to act for the best of his people. No he wonders, what if he gave in to Gi Cheol? Would Gi Cheol, with all his power, not be a better ruler? Lady Choi answers him: No. Gi Cheol is a man who thinks only of himself.

Gongmin mutters that there’s nothing else he can do, and she looks him in the eye and tells him: “These words – there’s nothing I can do, I have no choice – these are words a king is not allowed to say.”

In the forest, it’s quiet for a few minutes, then Choi calls out “Are you going to stand there all night?” Hwasuin steps out and approaches the sleeping Eun Soo, only to be stopped as Choi flings a stick into the ground at her feet. Unperturbed, she wonders what his relationship with Eun Soo is: the woman calls him a killer, but sleeps close to him anyway.

He asks if Dae Man was her doing, but she doesn’t know. Coyly, she strolls over and sits in his lap, asking about Eun Soo. He in turn wonders about the king, disregarding her comments. Finally, he asks what she knows: “Or are you just a dumb follower of your master?”

Posted Image

She backs off, but leaves with some information: “Gi Cheol will head to see the king tonight…and maybe he will mention you.” Gi Cheol is wanting more and more to possess Choi Young.

Right enough, Gi Cheol goes to the king to break the news that Choi Young has gone to the old king, and lays out the details: Choi did not ask the king’s permission, and he was going to a young boy with whom he doubtless had a strong bond, as opposed to the current king whom he had known for only a month. Ooh, clever. The king catches on: “So you’re trying to tell me that my Wudalchi is about to commit treason?” He says it like he doesn’t believe it, but his face wavers, and you can tell that Gongmin may start to have doubts about Choi’s loyalty to him. Uh-oh.

The next morning Choi and Eun Soo reach the king’s residence, which is a small and dilapidated single-room hut. Nevertheless, the boy happily rushes into Choi’s arms, crying out, “Young-ah! You came! You came!”

Eun Soo examines the boy while Choi tells him stories about ‘heaven’ – the buildings as tall as the sky, the bright lights, the moving carts without horses – but Eun Soo’s face is not looking good. She takes Choi aside and tells him the young boy needs surgery, and asks to move him to the Royal Hospital.

Choi looks grim as he tells her he can’t – if the boy steps foot outside the hut, he will be committing treason, since he’s in exile.

Choong-seok, meanwhile, sends a man to warn Choi Young, telling him that one step to take the former king out of his exile will mean death for them all. Oh no.

Choi leaves Eun Soo and the boy to wait for him while he gets supplies. Eun Soo promises to tell him all about heaven, and tells Choi that she’ll add babysitting to her payment.

Gi Won brings Eun Soo’s tools to Gi Cheol…who recognizes them. Wha? Where would there be modern surgical tools in Goryeo? Gi Cheol races to a side room and brings out a box of rusted tools…but identical to Eun Soo’s. “These tools were my teachers’, who said they came from Hwata…so the woman is truly Hwata’s disciple!” He commands Gi Won to fetch her back, but Gi Won protests that “the plan” is already in action and it’s too late. Gi Cheol races out to get Eun Soo himself.

Choi Young steps outside the building and within seconds is ambushed by Gi Cheol’s men. Madam Hwasuin contributes her fire bombs as well. Choi darts back inside and tells Eun Soo and the boy to follow him – they’re going to try and run for it. Oh no!

Posted Image

The three of them run outside through the attackers, just as Wudalchi guards come riding up. Choi starts to explain, but then suddenly the men who were attacking them turn around and attack the royal Wudalchi guards instead. One of them shouts, “Protect His Majesty!”

Oh crap. Now it looks as though Choi Young is fighting to bring the old king out of exile…and committing treason.
